Rocket Day & Flag Retirement

Youth who join Cub Scouts this year will receive a rocket that they can design, build, and launch at Rocket Day. Bring your rocket if you received it already. If not, you can pick up your rocket at the event. Everything else will be at the event (engines, launch pads, etc). There should also be other activities available to do at the event. 


Veterans Day Flag Retirement

This annual flag retirement ceremony is held on Veterans Day. There will be information about the flags, veterans and other topics. Scouts in the Alief area have collected worn and tattered flags to be properly retired in this ceremony. If you have any flags that are in need of retirement, please bring them along. The beginning of the event will be inside, and the retirement ceremony will be outside in the east (right) side parking lot. It is suggested you park in that parking lot.

2018 Pinewood Derby

LOCATION: Notre Dame Community Center

All cars must be checked in (or in line) prior to 1pm in order to race. Once your car has finished check-in, you cannot touch it. 

If your car needs to be repaired, do so before. This includes graphite touch-ups! Come early for adjustment help!

CONCESSIONS:

Snacks & drinks will be for sale. Please bring change (quarters & dollar bills) if you can, so we don't have to break big bills.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:

We need volunteers to help set-up and breakdown, run snacks,and other duties. If you would like to volunteer, speak to Aaron or Jason.

Come early and work on your car. While you wait for the race to start, you can play games and concessions provided by the Bear den starting at 11AM

If you plan on attending the Twilight Camp June 11-15, 2018, please go ahead and register now. If you register before 3/16 you get a $5.00 early registration discount. Twilight Camp is a whole lot of fun and a great value already, but take advantage of the discount while you can.

Twilight Camp is an opportunity for Scouts entering 1st – 5th grade during the 2018-2019 school year to make new friends, earn rank advancements and enjoy BB guns, archery, sports, skills, and crafts. Lots of volunteers are needed to make camp a success, so please consider volunteering. 

This is an evening only event. Scouts will go and come home each day (no overnight). 

When you register, you will need to pay online with a credit card, electronic check, or PayPal. If you are unable to register or pay online, let us know and we will help you. If you are selling coupon books, and sell 30 books, one Scout can go for FREE. IF you have already paid, your money will be refunded.

Boys who join Cub Scouts this year will receive a rocket that they can design, build, and launch at Rocket Day. Boys in first through fifth grade who are interested in joining Scouting may also attend. We will help you find a pack near you and get signed up for Scouting.

The Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will be doing their service of retiring worn and tattered flags. We need youth and adult volunteers to help in this process. Anyone is welcome to attend the cetermony. Please wear your Class A Uniform, if you have it. Please bring any flags you would like to retire.

Alief Parade & Proud Festival

If you want to be in the parade, arrive between 7:00-7:30am and look for other Scouts in uniform. All Scouts in the Alief area will be together as one group. The parade starts at 9:00 and will go down Bellaire Blvd and end up at Crump Stadium where the festival will be held. Scouts and their families can participate. 

 

Festival

The festival is from 9:00am - 12:00pm. The Scouts will have a table setup with information and also an activity. You don't have to go to the parade and the festival, you can do one or the other. There should be booths from all of the nearby schools and clubs. They also may have food trucks or other things for sale. We may need a few people to help setup at the festival prior to 9:00am

Webelos Extravaganza

Webelos Extravaganza is a weekend campout designed to introduce 4th and 5th grade Webelos Scouts to the many outdoor adventures of Boy Scouting. This year's event will focus on cooking skills with the theme "A Scout is Hungry." **Our unit has decided to go just for the day on Saturday from 8:00 - 3:30.  Cost is $10 per Webelos Scout and you must be registered to attend the event, so please make sure you communicate with your leader.

Program

This Webelos Extravaganza will teach cooking skills that require a minimum amount of utensils and clean up. There will be four cooking stations with two events at each. The events will not necessarily be in the order shown. There will be some opportunity for a hands-on experience for the Webelos and most stations will offer snacks of the food cooked. The Webelos Scouts will be split into four groups, one group per station. One hour will be spent at each station, then the groups will rotate to the next station.

  • Event 1 – Twisty Bread on a Stick
  • Event 2 – Omelet in a Bag
  • Event 3 – Utensil-less Cooking three ways
  • Event 4 – Silver Turtles
  • Event 5 – Dutch Oven Cobblers
  • Event 6 – Egg in a Paper Cup
  • Event 7 – Fire Building
  • Event 8 – Box Oven Cookies

What to Bring

  • BSA Annual Health and Medical Record (parts A & B for all Scouting events) for every participant
  • Field uniform (Scouting uniform) and activity uniform (Scout t-shirt)
  • Water Bottle
  • Lunch 

Directions

McKaskle Retreat Center is located at 25001 Kickapoo Rd, Waller, TX 77484. Take 290 West towards Hockley, Texas (approximately 15 minutes past Beltway 8). Exit Kickapoo Road, and turn right on Kickapoo. The McKaskle Retreat Center is on the left just past Spring Creek (approximately 5 miles).

Puff Up - Camping 10/13-10/15

When: October 13,14,15 - 2017

Where: Bovay Scout Ranch - 3450 County Rd 317, Navasota, TX 77868 (google map) - (campsite map

Cost: $20 Per Person Attending - $10 for activities, $10 for food.

About The Event:

This is a weekend camping with crafts, games, and other activities on Saturday. There will also be a mass for anyone who would like to attend. This is will be our second year attending the event and last year everyone had a lot of fun there. We will all camp together in the same camp site and most likely cook together, but you can bring your own food/snacks if you have a picky eater.

What To Bring:

Tent, Sleeping Bag OR Blankets and Pillow, Clothes, Toiletries, Water Bottle and anything else you might need. If you have a mattress pad, air mattress, or cot you can bring those if you wish. If this is your first time camping or you need gear or assistance, please let us know and we will try and help. Please bring your Pack T-Shirt and your Class A uniform if you have one. Closed-toe shoes are required AT ALL TIMES.

When & Where To Meet:

We are not planning to caravan to the event. You can come on your own on Friday evening or early Saturday morning. The events usually start at 8:30am, so if you come Saturday morning, make sure to come early.

Check-In:

Friday between 5:00pm-9pm, stop at the "drive thru" window at a small administrative building just inside the gates.  Each vehicle will receive a parking placard for the car’s dashboard.  Families will be directed to their campsites from this building. Pack 1113 is at campsite 6. Call 713-498-2254 if arriving after 9:30pm on Friday. If arriving Saturday, check in to get your placard and then call Jason to find us 713-295-1768. Activities start at 8:30am.

Plan to arrive as early as possible as it will make finding parking easier and also allow you to find our booth before your scheduled time. You can then explore the rest of the Scout Fair before coming back to work.

Other Important Information

Our Scout Fair location for 2017 is Minute Maid Park located at 501 Crawford St, Houston, TX 77002. To maximize your fun and fully enjoy your Scout Fair experience, please allow plenty of time for travel, parking and entering the park. We encourage you to please plan your route and morning arrival times for Saturday accordingly. Here are several key items to keep in mind:

  • Security  Due to Minute Maid Park’s position as a Major League Baseball facility, please be prepared to go through magnetometers and bag check anytime you are entering the building.  The applies to all guests, regardless if they have already been screened at a different gate.  Please allow extra time for security checks when preparing for your day at the Scout Fair.
  • Admission  Entry into Minute Maid Park is free. There will be no fee to attend Scout Fair at Minute Maid Park.
  • Food Absolutely NO outside food or drink will be allowed in the park. Scouts are welcome to exit the facility and go to their vehicles, picnic nearby and return as necessary. There will be several Aramark concessions stands throughout Minute Maid Park where food and drink items will be available for purchase.

Parking Lot Access

  • Access to Minute Maid parking Lots A, B and C will be accessible from the north side entrances off of Preston and Charters (west side entrance), St. Emanuel and Hutchinson entrance from the North side.
  • Texas St. Access is only available till 8:30 am Saturday. Afternoon streets will be open to the public after the parade ends.
  • Please note maps on the website and your parking pass that will indicate the open entrances.
  • Preston on the East side of the stadium is two way. Hamilton is One Way North to South. Chartres is One Way, South to North. St. Emanuel and Hutchison are two way.
  • Harris County Sheriff Department and HPD Officers will be on site to move traffic and assist in access to Minute Maid Parking lots.
  • WE REPEAT: Please plan your route and morning arrival times for Saturday accordingly.

Super Duper Smoked Snacks Sales

Selling the Country Meat smoked snacks is a great fundraiser for our unit. Each snack sells for $1 and .42 goes back to the unit with a majority going towards the Scout selling. This money can be used to pay for dues or activities throughout the year.

Check out the quality versus regular store brand snacks in this short  YouTube video. Country Meat smoked snacks have way less oil/grease/juices coming out of them.

Lake Somerville Map & Directions

The campout will be at Lake Somerville State Park in the Birch Creek section. Please read the information below for more details.

Directions:

You can choose to go Beltway 8 to 290 to 36 North. OR You can go I-10 to 36 N. From the church, the Beltway route is 20 minutes faster, but you will have to pay 2 tolls.

- Follow 36 N through the city of Somerville until you reach 976 / Frenstat Road. Turn Left

- Turn Left on 60

- After 2.5 miles, 60 will curve to the left, but you want to turn right onto Park Road 57.

- Follow Park Road 57 into the park and let them know you are with Pack 1113 and they will guide you to where we are camping.

(Note: Directions may tell you to turn onto 60 from 36 N, but there is a bridge out, so we must go around). 

 

Fees:

Park Entrance Fees - $4/day per person over 12 years old. 

Food - $10 per person paid to Aaron

Camping - FREE

 

Arrival:

You can choose to arrive on Friday evening or Saturday morning. If you arrive late Friday when the front office is closed, you will just setup camp and check in on Saturday morning.  You may need to call someone to help guide you to the campsite.

 

Health Forms:

We must have a health form on file for everyone attending the campout. This means all scouts, parents, siblings and anyone else. You can download and print a copy of the form here or fill one out as soon as you arrive to camp.

Workshops

Most workshops will be held 9-11AM, except on 2 dates where they will be in the afternoon after Scouting For Food. We will also have one evening workshop right before the derby. It is not necessary to attend all workshops, but have a look at the description and plan to attend the ones where you would like assistance.

Arboretum Trip - Sat 12/10

Meet at the Houston Arboretum @ 10am. We will take a nature hike and explore the area until around 12pm at which time you can leave or stay and continue exploring on your own. There is no cost for this event, but they do sell things inside. Please try and wear your Pack T-Shirt, so we can look uniform; however, I know it will be cold, so a jacket will likely cover it up. It is recommended you wear long pants, closed toe shoes and bring a bottle full of water to drink.

Christmas Party - Wed 12/14

Boys who join Cub Scouts this year before September 30th will receive a rocket that they can design, build, and launch at Rocket Day. The event is free; please register so we can make sure we have an engine available for your Scout.

What to Bring

  • Your Rocket - Scouts may decorate their rockets with stickers or markers, but no additional weight should be added.
  • Annual Health Form - Make sure this has been turned into the Pack
  • Closed Toed Shoes
  • Optional - Snacks, Water Bottle, Camp Chair, Sunscreen, Bug Spray

Rocket Launch Safety

The safety of our youth, volunteers, staff, and employees is an important part of the Scouting experience. 

Only adults are allowed to handle or load rocket motors. Adults should always closely supervise ALL rocketry building, launching, and recovery activities.

National Association of Rocketry (NAR) Safety Code and other safety guidelines will be followed: 

  • Launch safety – countdowns, 15-foot safety circle
  • Launchers – End of launch rod must be above eye level.
  • Launch site – 200-foot open area required for a type B engine; monitor wind and dry grass conditions
  • Every rocket should be safety inspected prior to launch.
  • If a rocket misfires or does not launch, be sure to wait a minimum of 30 seconds before approaching it.
  • Lightning, winds, or any adverse weather should immediately stop the launch.
  • Recovery safety – Do not attempt recovery from power lines, tall trees, etc.
  • In case of inclement weather, the launch will be rescheduled.
  • BSA Guide to Safe Scouting policies must be followed.

All participants must follow Youth Protection Guidelines at all Scouting events.  Highlights include:

  • Two-deep leadership on all outings required.  
  • One-on-one contact between adults and youth members is prohibited. 
  • The buddy system should be used at all times. 
  • Discipline must be constructive.

We will get tickets as a group to see 'The Secret Life of Pets' at AMC Loews Fountains 18. We will purchase matinee tickets, and expect the start time to be 10-11AM. Ticket orders will be placed on Wednesday July 13th, so please RSVP by then. Cost will be $5.62 per person. 

Saturday, July 30th - 9am - Health Museum + Picnic

We will meet at The Health Museum at 9am on Saturday and explore it for 2-3 hours. After that we will gather at Herman Park nearby for a picnic lunch. Cost is $9 for Adults, $7 for Children 3-12, 2 and under FREE. If everyone RSVP's soon and we have 15 or more people attending, we can save $2 per each ticket. For the picnic, just bring your own food and drinks.

Saturday, August 13th - Trip to Pirates Bay (Waterpark)

We will caravan from the church leaving at 8:30am and arriving at Pirates Bay around 9:15am. The park opens at 10am but everyone lines up to get in as only so many people can enter the park at a time. Cost is $20 for over 48" and $15 for under. Wear swim clothes, bring sun tan lotion along with an ice chest with food and drinks.
